3 Tips for Summer Hair Care– Keeping your hair looking its best amidst chlorine and sun damage.

The weather is heating up, and along with that comes long days in the pool, at the beach, and outside soaking up the sun. While we get to enjoy the beautiful weather this time of year, it’s important to consider how to best care for your hair as the temperature goes up and we’re spending more time outdoors. From chlorine to sun protection, here are 3 tips to care for your hair during the summer months.

Protect your hair from Chlorine damage with leave-in conditioner.⬇️

-Yep, that’s right! You can easily protect your hair from chlorine related damage and discoloration with your favorite leave-in conditioner! The best way to do this is to wet your hair with tap water before getting in the pool, towel dry and thoroughly apply your leave-in of choice. Wetting your hair with tap water BEFORE getting in the pool saturates your hair, so that it’s less likely to absorb the chlorinated water of the pool. Applying your leave-in thoroughly before entering the pool also helps to protect the hair as well as adds moisture while being exposed to drying pool chemicals. Some of our favorite leave-in conditioners are It’s A 10 Miracle Leave-in, and Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Moisture Mist.

Chlorine Rescue! How to restore hair that’s been discolored from the pool.

-If you’ve already got chlorinated mineral build up in your hair, worry not! We have fixes for that! Both in-salon treatments and shampoos are available to help bring your hair back to life if you’ve accidentally got yourself a case of chlorine related buildup. Tell-tale signs of this in the hair are if it has a slippery, almost slimy feel when wet, smells of chlorine even after shampooing, or if it feels dry and brittle after long amounts of swimming. Oftentimes, blondes will even notice a green cast to their hair if it’s over chlorinated. In salon services, like a Malibu-C Swimmer’s Wellness treatment is one of the best ways to remove chlorine and get your hair looking and feeling back to normal. It’s a gently opens the hair cuticle to remove damaging mineral deposits and toxins, and lifts out copper build-up. (Which is actually what causes discoloration in blondes!) To maintain at home, our favorite shampoo for swimmers is Paul Mitchell Shampoo Three, which is a lighter clarifier than the malibu treatment, great for at home use to remove chlorine and mineral buildup. ☀️Protect your hair from the sun, the same as you would your skin! -Most people know that the sun’s rays can be damaging to your skin, but did you also know that it can damage your hair as well? Overexposure to UV rays can not only dry your hair out but also fade hair color. Sunburn to the scalp can also be detrimental to the overall health of your hair. Best practices for being in the sun are to either wear a hat or head covering, apply sunscreen to areas of your scalp exposed to the sun (such as your part or around the hairline), and apply products to your hair that contain UV protection. Some of our favorites we have in the salon are Moroccan Oil Protect and Prevent Spray, and Paul Mitchell Color Protect Locking Spray.

While there is no “one size fits all” solution to summer hair care, these are some base line tips to keeping your hair looking and feeling its best. Here’s to enjoying the sun and pool and keeping your hair healthy!
