Getting A Mammogram- A Test That May Potentially Save Your Life … AND A FUNNY STORY

It seems many of us know, or will know, someone who has been affected by breast cancer.

Why are Mammograms such an important part of being a woman, especially for women over 40? The answer is simple, yet extremely important! It is because they can truly be life saving!!

If you have not yet had the experience of getting one, you may have heard stories about the pain involved in the test. I’m here to tell you, it is not painful at all. It might be a little uncomfortable or embarrassing, but it is well worth it to have the test done. When the procedure is over, there is no lingering, uncomfortable feeling. Once it is done, it is done and over.

I’d like to share a story of one of my own mammograms. It’s meant to amuse you and trust me when I say, I don’t think having a mammogram is a joke or laughing matter, but I’m the type of person who tries to turn an uncomfortable situation into a funny story.

I was 64 years old when I sat in the waiting room to fill out the usual questions for my yearly, routine mammogram. They ask your name, age, birthdate, etc. When I was done, the very nice technician approached me and asked if her paperwork was correct. Her paperwork stated I had a breast reduction the year before. Shocked to hear that, I answered “No, and you’ll be able to tell that when you see these puppies.” She laughed, and I knew I had a technician with a great sense of humor.

After I put on one of the gowns, that just screams “fashion”, I was led into the room where they have the machine that would engulf my lady parts without even a “how do you do?”

As the tech was trying to arrange my girls on the cold slab, I could tell she was having a little bit of trouble. I apologized, and told her my girls haven’t had this much attention since last year’s appointment.

Just as she found the right spot and put the machine in the squeeze position, I told her I had a lot of pain in my chest in the morning right after I got out of the shower. She stopped, looked concerned, and said, ”Oh that’s not good.”

I replied, “It’s ok, I realized I was standing on my nipples.”

The tech bent over holding her side laughing, as the machine was still in the smashed position. I quickly realized my timing was not the best.

I did go on to tell her more interesting facts about my life, but I made sure where my girls were when I would share a story.

She asked me what my occupation was. I explained I was a mobile DJ and how my husband and I had also owned our own balloon store and delivered balloons in costumes. There wouldn’t have been enough time to tell her most of the bizarre or unusual stories, so I just told her one.

I delivered balloons in many costumes, one being a big yellow chicken. I always wore the costume (except the chicken head, of course) when I drove to the location. On the way to one of the deliveries, I wondered what it would be like to be in an accident while dressed as a chicken and imagined the conversation between the ambulance driver and the hospital. “We have a chicken with a broken wing, and you should see the breasts on this thing.”

Another stomach holding moment.

As I waited to see if I would need to repeat any of the scans, the tech showed me one, and said that I have the breasts of a 40 year old. Well, they were hanging off a 64 year old body, but I’m sure they’ll catch up.

As I was about to leave, I turned around and said to her, “If I have the breasts of a 40 year old, I’m going to go to the proctologist to see how old my a## really is!”

Okay, all jokes aside now, let’s talk about how important it really is for women to get their mammograms.

Breast cancer is a pervasive disease that affects countless women worldwide. Taking proactive steps towards early detection and prevention is crucial for improving outcomes. In this blog, we will delve into the importance of breast cancer awareness, the significance of mammograms, and how you can actively contribute to the cause.

The Numbers: An Alarming Reality

Breast cancer continues to be a prevalent health concern, affecting numerous women worldwide. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), a staggering number of cases are diagnosed each year, making it imperative for women to take charge of their health through regular screenings. Early detection can significantly improve outcomes, offering better treatment options and increasing the chances of successful recovery.

The Recommended Age(s) for Mammogram Screening

The CDC recommends that women should begin mammogram screenings at the age of 40. However, individual risk factors may lead to differing recommendations. Women with a family history of breast cancer or certain genetic mutations may be advised to start screening earlier. It is crucial for women to discuss their personal risk factors with their healthcare provider to determine the most appropriate age to begin screening.

The Power of Regular Screening

Mammograms play a pivotal role in detecting breast cancer at an early stage, even before symptoms manifest. They can identify small abnormalities or lumps that may not be palpable during a physical examination. Early detection empowers women to make informed decisions about their health and take necessary actions promptly if any concerning findings are identified.

How and Where to Get a Mammogram

Getting a mammogram is a straightforward and relatively painless procedure. Women can schedule a mammogram with their healthcare provider or visit designated screening centers. During the procedure, the breast is compressed briefly between two plates to obtain high-quality images. These images are then carefully examined by radiologists to detect any signs of breast cancer.

Supporting the Cause: Breast Cancer Awareness and Research

Breast cancer awareness and research initiatives are vital in driving progress toward improved prevention, detection, and treatment strategies. Organizations like breastcancer.org are dedicated to raising awareness, providing valuable resources, and supporting ongoing research efforts. Donating to these organizations can contribute to funding research, promoting education, and assisting individuals affected by breast cancer.

Conclusion: Empower Your Health, Get Regular Mammograms

In conclusion, mammograms are a powerful tool in the fight against breast cancer. Early detection through regular screenings can save lives, and enhance treatment outcomes. As women, we must take charge of our health and prioritize routine mammograms. By staying informed, knowing the signs and symptoms, and scheduling regular screenings, we can be proactive in protecting ourselves against breast cancer’s potential impact. Additionally, supporting breast cancer organizations through donations or volunteer efforts allows us to contribute to ongoing research and support those who are battling this disease. Together, we can make a significant difference in the fight against breast cancer and work towards a future where early detection and effective treatments lead to better outcomes for all.
